Tools that back our reviews

The numbers behind every card review on this site come from these tools. When we say a welcome bonus is worth $1,200, the points valuation tool is what produces that figure — and the methodology is public.

How to use the tools together

The 3-step workflow

Most card decisions benefit from running through three tools in order. Here’s the workflow our team uses before applying for any new card.

The 3-step card evaluation workflow

When you’re deciding whether to apply for a new card, this is the order our team runs the analysis. Takes about 10 minutes start to finish.

01

Value the welcome bonus

Use the points valuation tool to convert the welcome bonus into a cash equivalent. A 60K bonus might be worth $600 or $1,200 depending on the program.

02

Check the math

Run your typical spending through the sign-up bonus calculator to see if hitting the minimum spend is realistic without changing your behavior.

03

Compare to alternatives

Use the card comparison tool to see this card side-by-side with the closest alternative. Sometimes the second-best card wins on long-term value.

Tools built on real data

Every number our tools produce traces back to a public methodology. Point valuations come from real redemptions we’ve made. Card data comes from issuer terms verified monthly. We don’t hide the math — and we update it when programs change.

Tools FAQ

Common questions, answered

Common questions about our tools, methodology, and data sources. For more, see our full FAQ page.

Where do your point valuations come from?

Our valuations are based on strategic redemption value — the cents-per-point you can expect when transferring to a partner and booking a real award, not the 1¢ portal baseline. We base values on actual bookings our team has made, current award chart availability, and the realistic value to someone willing to be a little flexible with travel dates. See our methodology page for the full framework.

How often are the tools updated?

Point valuations are reviewed monthly and updated whenever a program makes a material change. Card data in the comparison tool is verified monthly against issuer terms. The transfer partner cheat sheet is updated immediately whenever a transfer ratio changes.

Are these tools really free?

Yes — every tool on this site is free, requires no sign-up, no email, and no payment. We earn money through affiliate commissions when readers apply for cards through our links (see our advertiser disclosure), not by charging for tools.

Can I use these tools on mobile?

Yes. Every tool is built to work on phone, tablet, and desktop. We test on iOS Safari, Android Chrome, and the major desktop browsers before each update.

Why are your point valuations different from other sites?

Different sites value points differently because the underlying methodology varies. Some sites use portal value (typically 1¢ per point), some use average redemption, some use peak redemption. We use strategic-but-achievable value — what a thoughtful traveler can realistically expect, not a best-case-scenario number that’s hard to hit. That tends to make our valuations more conservative than aspirational sites but more useful for actual planning.

Can I suggest a new tool?

Absolutely. Email us with your idea — reader requests drive most of what we build. If we get the same request more than a few times, it goes on the roadmap.
