Transfer only when necessary, complete the ticket and save the confirmation.

Critical distinction: The airline operating the flight, the airline selling the ticket and the loyalty program charging the miles may be different companies.

Do not transfer when:

You are merely speculating, the award is not available, the program rules are unclear or the points may be more useful elsewhere.

Use a Simple Value Formula

Basic formula: (Cash price avoided − award taxes and fees) ÷ points used = value per point.

Then adjust for flexibility, cancellation rules, cash savings you would actually pay, and the value of preserving points for another trip.

Use the real cash alternative

Do not compare against a price you would never pay.

Subtract taxes and fees

A high award surcharge reduces the practical value.

Include opportunity cost

Using points now means they are unavailable for a future redemption.
